Passage1

Reviewing the history and summing up its experiences, China is determined to carry out the “Three Representations”, and firmly continue its way of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.//We hope that in the future, all states and ethnic groups will co-exist in peace and harmony and cooperate in a friendly manner with each other for common development and realize lasting peace and universal prosperity. //The Chinese people are ready to work with the people of all other countries to fight against hegemony and power politics, push forward the process of multi- polarization and create a glorious future for the world. //We firmly believe that in the new century, the Chinese people will unshakably proceed along the road of building socialism with Chinese characteristics and China's socialist system will be consolidated and perfected through continuous reforms. //The Chinese nation will be rejuvenated due to the motherland's complete reunification and the establishment of a prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and modern socialist country. //

Passage2

China's negotiations for the accession to the multilateral trading system over the past 15 years have been an integral part of the process of its reform and opening up from the beginning to the end. We have drawn the following three basic conclusions from our own experiences:// First, only by participating in the multilateral trading system with a positive stance, can various countries in the world better share the benefits of economic globalization; //Second, during the course of economic globalization, only by establishing an economic and trade regime in line with international practices and the specific situation of the country, can they avoid their disadvantages and fully play out advantages, and therefore electively safeguard their respective economic security while opening to the outside world; //and Third, only by constantly adapting itself to the development and changes of world economy and by fully reflecting the interests and requirements of all parties including developing countries, can the multilateral trading system maintain its vigor and vitality. //

Passage 3

The World Exposition displays the achievements and prospects in the economic, cultural and technological sectors, and is an event where people from all over the world come together to exchange experience and ideas, and learn from one another. //Long known as the “economic, technological and cultural Olympic Games”, the World Exposition is held every five years, and has been held in developed countries since it first took place in London in 1851.// If Shanghai wins the bid for the 2010 World Exposition, China will be-the first developing country to host this major event.// Hosting the exposition will have a positive impact on China, as China will not only learn from the experiences of other countries to further its reform and opening-up endeavor, but will also enhance its friendly relations with other countries. //Besides, its role as hosting country will no doubt accelerate the development of world expositions elsewhere, which can promote worldwide economic, cultural and technological development. //

Passage 4

Shanghai, literally known as “a port on the sea”, is one of the world's largest seaports and China's major industrial and commercial center.// With its deepening economic reform, this city, formerly crowned as the financial, economic and trade hub of the Far East, is playing a leading role in boosting economic development in the Yangtze River valley. //One of the noted historic and cultural cities in China, Shanghai has over 70 sites of historical interest and cultural relics under the protection of the state and the municipal governments, which best represent the distinctive characteristics of Shanghai regional culture. //Shanghai culture is the result of combining the cultures of the south and the north and melting the cultures of the east and the west. //The sea admits hundreds of rivers for its capacity to hold. Shanghai's great tolerance originates from its history of sufficient opening-up. The rapid rise of Shanghai owes so much to its reform and opening up.//

Passage 5

The towering skyscrapers are signs of Shanghai’s prosperity and the magnets that attract both local and foreign talent to converge on the metropolis. //Besides, people are spoilt for choice by the variety of recreational and entertainment activities that demonstrate how colorful and interesting life is in Shanghai. //It is no wonder that Chinese and overseas tourists re flocking to the city. //Shanghai presents a unique mix of East and West as well as new and old in wining, dining and merry-making.// While the choices are increasingly global, consumer goods are cheaper than in most big cities. Not surprisingly, discerning tourists recognize it at once as a shoppers’ paradise when they arrive in Shanghai.//

Passage 6

National ecological security refers to the sustainability of the ecological environment for one country’s existence and development. // In comparison with military, political and economic security, ecological security has a wider influence on the common people living in a country. //Once its ecological environment is destroyed, the future survival of the whole nation, especially the poor, will be horribly undermined, and it will be extremely difficult for a generation, or even tens of generations to reclaim the environment once ecological deterioration goes beyond a certain threshold.// Although protection of the environment has long been a matter of basic state policy for the Chinese government, it is an undeniable fact that, on the whole, efforts to improve the environment have largely failed to match destructive forces working against them. //

Passage 7

Mother tongue is the first language that a person picks up and is usually the standard language or dialect of that particular ethnic group. //According to a UNESCO report on the International Mother Tongue Day, about half of the 6,700 or so languages in the world are in danger of dying. //In a globalized economy where a computer is all that is needed to access information all over the world, it is inevitable that weaker languages are replaced by the more dominant ones. The presence of different races, languages and cultures has made the world so much more interesting and the languages and dialects of minority races do have their own small roles to play. //

Passage 8

In China, I look forward to seeing again, firsthand, the remarkable changes that are taking place as China opens to the world.// America welcomes China's recent entry into the World Trade Organization, which will encourage American trade with China, and encourage economic freedom and the rule of law in China, itself. //I look forward to talking to the Chinese about their commitment to open up their markets to U.S. agricultural products. //I'm also looking forward to meeting with Chinese students, because it gives me an opportunity to talk about the America I know -- an America with strong values of family, community, faith and freedom. //And I will express my hopes that as China moves forward, it, too, will embrace the universal demands of human dignity, freedom of conscience and religion, and the rights and value of every life./ /

Passage 9

Ever since ancient times, sports has transcended differences in race, color and culture and given expression to mankind’s aspirations for and pursuit of a peaceful and better world, as evidenced in the Olympic spirit that came into being more than 2,000 years ago. //Sport not only builds one’s physique, but also teaches communication, cooperation, respect for others, and acceptance of failure. As such, it is an important medium for strengthening the ties among different civilizations and values. //The government and people of China have always admired the purposes and principles of the Olympic spirit and supported the efforts made by the Olympics in promoting world peace. // The Chinese Government and people are doing our utmost in our preparations for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing in the hope of making it a grand gathering that will carry forward the Olympic spirit, promote world peace and enhance the friendship among peoples of the world. //

Passage 10

Past experience tells us that unswerving adherence to the opening-up policy is the fundamental prerequisite for China’s continuous foreign economic and trade development.// Past experience tells us that the sustained, rapid and healthy development of the national economy is the basis for sustained growth of China’s foreign trade and economy, //that the establishment of the socialist market economy is the fundamental driving force for continuous foreign economic and trade growth, //and that maintaining the continuity and stability of favorable policies and improving comprehensive competitiveness are the basic conditions for sustained foreign economic and trade development. //Looking into the future, we will strive for continuous development of China’s opening-up and foreign economic and trade cooperation, turn China from a major trading nation to a trade power//
